Energy Research: What Should be on the Agenda and why?

One often hears that "there are no silver bullets" among energy technologies. Such egalitarian sentiments ignore the need to optimally allocate the limited human and financial resources available. After reviewing the societal contexts in which energy technologies must be developed and deployed, I will discuss the research needs of those most likely to have a material impact on the energy challenges of the coming decades.
